Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of India's best captains, especially in Test cricket. In late 2014, he took over as India’s Test captain from MS Dhoni and led the team to the number one spot in the rankings.
Under his captaincy, India reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup, and the final of the inaugural World Test Championship.

Another key figure during India's rise in late 2010s was Ravi Shastri, who initially was appointed as the team's director before assuming duties as a head coach.
The former cricketer and coach was all praise about Kohli the batter and captain in his recent interview with Sky Sports Cricket, where he termed the Indian batter as the best player he has coached.
Ravi Shastri names Kohli as his favourite player
As coach and captain, Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli led India to notable success, including winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, one of India’s greatest Test cricket achievements.
When asked by fans about the finest player he coached, Shastri singled out Kohli, highlighting his remarkable tours of South Africa, England, and Australia between 2017 and 2019 as proof of his greatness.

"He was the one man I had identified who would lead the team, and I wanted him to lead the team once I took over, and Dhoni had finished. He did a magnificent job," said Shastri.
"I think his first skills as a batter was his ability to dominate and be in the face, play hard and play fair and wanting to take the game forward.
"Kohli the batter in his pomp, was unbelievable because in those five years, when India were number one in the red-ball format, some of the innings he played in Australia, South Africa and England across formats were unreal," he concluded.
During his tenure as captain, Kohli was in the best form of his life, scoring over 15,000 runs across formats in the 2014-20 period at an average of 60.88 and having 48 centuries to his name.
The 36-year-old was also named as the ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade for his performances from 2011 to 2020, alongside ICC Men's ODI Player of the Decade.
