The BCCI closed its books for the 2023-24 financial year with a revenue of ₹9,741.7 crore. As expected, IPL was the driving force behind the numbers.

It contributed to a massive 59% of the earnings. That's ₹5,761 crore from just one tournament.

This highlights the IPL's position not just in Indian cricket but in global sports economics. The explosive growth of the IPL's media rights has been a big contributor to this surge.

With the tournament enjoying a worldwide viewership, primarily driven by the global Indian diaspora, the league continues to attract big-ticket sponsors and broadcasters. For the current 2023–2027 cycle, Disney Star and Viacom18 hold the broadcasting rights.

What are BCCI's other sources of revenue?

While the IPL dominates the earnings, the BCCI also generated ₹361 crore from non-IPL media rights, covering bilateral series involving Team India. Currently, Viacom18 holds the broadcast rights for Indian national matches.

According to a report by Rediffusion, the BCCI has also displayed business sense in locking in deals and growing its brand beyond just matchdays.

Sponsorships, matchday revenue and interest from its ₹30,000 crore reserves (reportedly bringing in around ₹1,000 crore annually) add to a strong financial ecosystem.

Will BCCI's revenue continue to grow in the future?

Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion, said that the BCCI also has plenty of untapped potential. He suggested that traditional domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy could be further commercialised to diversify the board's income beyond the IPL.

With its revenues expected to grow by 10-12% annually and over ₹1,000 crore already rolling in as interest from cash reserves, BCCI continues to solidify its status as the wealthiest cricket board in the world.
