He brought up his maiden double hundred in style. Gill became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double century in a Test match in England.
He was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 269 off 387 balls with 30 boundaries and 3 sixes to his name. Jadeja looked on course for a century but fell for 89 runs.
Tendulkar reacts to Gill and Jadeja’s 203-run stand at Edgbaston
Tendulkar took to social media to applaud the character shown by the pair in testing conditions.
"Very pleased to see the intent and commitment shown by @ShubmanGill and @imjadeja today. Well played," he wrote on X.
At the time of this writing, India were closing in on 600 runs. Gill's and Jadeja's partnership came at a time when England had hoped to tighten things after early wickets.
The English bowlers turned to the short-ball strategy. But Gill and Jadeja handled it calmly.
Jadeja opened the day with good strokes against Ben Stokes while Gill got into his rhythm with precise placements and a series of classy drives. England's patience finally paid off when Josh Tongue dismissed Gill. But by then, the damage was done.
Gill's double hundred didn't just revive India's innings; it also got his name into the history books. His knock marked the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test in England.
