India’s narrow loss at Lord’s in the third Test has sparked criticism from former South African batter Herschelle Gibbs.
In a post on social media, Gibbs pointed out what many fans were already feeling that India may have let the game slip due to a cautious and overly defensive approach during their fourth innings chase of 193 runs.

Let's see what Gibbs had to say.
Herschelle Gibbs slammed India’s approach in the run-chase
Reacting after the match, Gibbs posted on X, “Came close in the end but lack of intent cost India the game.”
India struggled to keep the scoreboard moving, especially during crucial partnerships involving Ravindra Jadeja and the lower-order.
Gibbs, known for his aggressive batting style, likely expected more urgency from batters like Jadeja and Nitish Reddy when the target was still within reach.

How did India's approach on Day 5 raise eyebrows?
India resumed Day 5 on 58/4 needing 135 more runs to win. However, what followed was a slow and steady phase, especially after a collapse where they lost three wickets for just 11 runs.
From 82/7, Jadeja tried to anchor the innings, first with Nitish Reddy (13 off 53 balls) and later with Jasprit Bumrah (5 off 54).
Jadeja’s unbeaten 61 came off 181 deliveries and while he showed resilience, the lack of aggressive batting with the tail became a talking point.
Looking back, India had their moments. Rishabh Pant had struck boundaries early before falling to Archer. KL Rahul was dismissed by a brilliant nip-backer from Stokes. Even Washington Sundar didn’t open his account.

Still, India fought back through Jadeja’s partnerships with Reddy and Bumrah, who bravely hung in for 54 balls. However, the lack of urgency raised questions. Could they have taken a few more calculated risks earlier?
When does the fourth Test start?
The fourth Test between India and England begins on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester. England currently lead the five-match series 2-1 after wins at Headingley and Lord’s.
India will need to reassess their batting strategy in tight chases, especially with the series hanging in the balance. With questions being asked about Jasprit Bumrah’s availability and England losing Bashir to injury, both teams will have selection concerns.
