In a very disappointing IPL season for the Chennai Super Kings, the young South African star Dewald Brevis emerged as the most valuable mid-season signing.

CSK brought in Brevis for 2.2 CR, later in the season as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, who was originally signed for the same amount. In his late burst in the IPL, the Proteas star, featured in six games and left a very strong impact.

Recently, a fresh controversy emerged, when R Ashwin, and Indian legend and a CSK player revealed that Brevis initially demanded extra salary to play for the franchise. Ashwin remarked that the South African wanted an extra salary, and CSK was ready to pay that amount, which eventually led to his signing.

CSK breaks silence on Ashwin remarks

The five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings have now issued a clarification on the matter. The franchise took to the social media platforms and mentioned that they have signed Brevis as per the rules and regulations of the IPL, and for the very amount, for which Gurjapneet was bought in the auction.

"Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," the franchise stated.

Brevis originally went unsold in the IPL 2025 auctions. His base price for the auction was set at 75 Lakhs. It is important to mention that CSK signed Gurjapneet for 2,2 Cr in the mega auction and the same amount was given to his replacement Dewald Brevis.

CSK, in their official statement, cited clause 6.6 under 'Replacement Players', which states, "A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season."

R Ashwin reacts to the Brevis controversy

The CSK spinner R Ashwin has now come forward with his clarifications on the matter. He believes that his statements were misinterpreted and people just wanted to make headlines out of it.

Talking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "CSK did not go on the wrong side. No one said that CSK went on the wrong side. Don’t come to me saying I spoke wrongly about CSK. CSK should be studied like: 'CSK masterstroked by signing Dewald Brevis' – the future of the team. Go and ask Aakash Chopra about this, don’t just talk or believe only by reading the headlines."

Brevis was instrumental for CSK's victory in the last few games of the IPL 2025. The 22-year-old batter provided the side with a boost in the middle-order which was long missing from their side.

Brevis is currently in the form of his life. The young batter scored a magnificent hundred, his maiden international hundred against Australia in the second T20I. He followed it with a quick-fire fifty in the third game of the series.
