India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant had to be replaced by Dhruv Jurel during the second session on Day 1 of the Lord's Test between India and England. The Indian wicket-keeper suffered a finger injury while keeping behind the stumps.

The incident took place when Jasprit Bumrah bowled a delivery down the leg side to Ollie Pope. The ball went past the Englishman's pads for two runs off a bye.

The ball reached Pant and as he attempted to stop it. But the ball struck the Indian wicket-keeper's his left index finger and immediately complained about the injury.

He continued for the rest of the over before backup wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel was called in as a substitute. Jurel kept the wickets for the rest of the day.

As Jurel takes the field again on Day 2, The Sporting News explains if he can bat in this match in place of the injured Pant.

Can Dhruv Jurel bat as a substitute for injured Rishabh Pant at Lord's?

As per the ICC playing conditions rules, Dhruv Jurel cannot replace Rishabh Pant in the batting lineup. However, he can continue keeping the wickets as a substitute.

According to clause 1.2.7, a substitute can only bat or bowl if he is coming in as a replacement in cases of concussion due to a head or neck injury, which is not the case in this situation.

When can Pant bat after being replaced by Jurel as the wicketkeeper at Lord's?

As stated in clause 24.2.3.2 in ICC's playing condition rules, Pant will have to wait for the same amount of time that he spends outside the field during India's bowling innings before he is allowed to bat.

However, he will be immediately allowed to bat if India loses 5 wickets in their innings and the penalty is not completely served.

24.2.3.2 The player shall not be permitted to bat in the match until his team’s batting innings has been in progress for the length of playing time that is equal to the unexpired Penalty time carried forward from the previous innings. However, once his side has lost five wickets in its batting innings, he may bat immediately. If any unexpired penalty time remains at the end of that batting innings, it is carried forward to the next and subsequent innings of the match.

For example, let's say Pant spends five hours outside the field and then comes back as the wicketkeeper for an hour, he will have to wait four hours before he is allowed to bat.

However, if India loses 5 wickets within the four hours, he will be allowed to bat despite not serving the penalty.

How has Dhruv Jurel performed for India?

In his short Test career that has lasted 4 matches, Jurel has scored 202 runs in 4 matches.

He scored an impressive 90 against England in Ranchi that helped India go from 130/4 to 307/10 in 2024 as his best performance.
