BCCI puts 2025 Asia Cup as priority, not Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future: Report image

The BCCI is in no hurry to determine the ODI futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, according to a PTI report.

Despite increasing speculation over whether the two senior batters will play until the 2027 ODI World Cup, the immediate focus is on the 2025 Asia Cup T20 and preparations for the T20 World Cup in February.

With India's ODI series against Bangladesh in August called off, the team's next 50-over assignment will be a three-match away series against Australia from October 19-25. Until then, the board's attention is firmly on playing the strongest possible T20 squad.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future remains open

Kohli and Rohit have a combined tally of 83 ODI centuries and more than 25,000 runs but they will be nearing 40 by the time of the 2027 World Cup.

A senior BCCI official told PTI that any decision on their ODI roles will be made with care - keeping in mind their stature in Indian cricket and their large fan following.

"From the team's perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament," the source said.

No confirmation on farewell match for Kohli and Rohit

Reports have hinted at a possible farewell match for the duo in Sydney on October 25 but BCCI sources say no such plans are in motion. Both players have been out of competitive action since the IPL.

Kohli - now based in London, recently posted a clip from an indoor training session. Rohit - back from a break in the UK, is expected to resume practice in Mumbai soon.

India's packed ODI and domestic cricket schedule in late 2025

Following the Australia ODIs, India will host South Africa in a three-match ODI series starting November 30. An India A series earlier in November will feature three 50-over games in Rajkot.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy begins on December 24 but overlaps with ODIs against New Zealand in January 2026. This means Kohli and Rohit could only play a couple of domestic matches if they participate at all.
