The Delhi Capitals are hoping the Indian Premier League 2023 can finally be the year they break their title duck.

Having finished runners-up in 2020, the Capitals topped the group stage a year later only to lose in the play-offs.

Things didn't go to plan 12 months ago either, as the Capitals finished fifth to miss out on the play-offs. With a number of inclusions made to bolster their roster, maybe 2023 will finally be the year they get the job done.

Here, Sporting News previews everything you need to know about the Capitals ahead of IPL 2023.

Three years ago, the Capitals went closest to finally ending their wait for a championship and it came outside of India with the tournament being played in the UAE due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Shreyas Iyer (65no) and Rishabh Pant (56) helped the Capitals to 156-7 but the Mumbai Indians chased down that total with eight balls to spare to win by five wickets.

The Capitals won 10 of 14 league matches to sit top of the standings in 2021 but fumbled in the playoffs – losing to the Chennai Super Kings in the preliminary qualifier then going down to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier.

Rilee Rossouw and Manish Pandey have been added to the side to bulk up the side's batting stocks. The pair will join retained players David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, who will be playing under fellow Aussie and head coach Ricky Ponting.

Warner will be deputising as captain  for Pant, who is unavailable after being in a car crash. Phil Salt is likel to slot into the middle order, while Abishek Porel is expected to sign and take the gloves.

Axar Patel has emerged as one of the most important players for the Capitals and India sides after showing his power-hitting during the recent Test series against Australia on home soil, which India won 2-1.

Patel slotted into the batting order at number eight and showed his aggressive hitting against the likes of Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.

Top-order batsman Prithvi Shaw has shown that he is a name to remember. Shaw made displayed his prodigious talent when he captained his country to the Under-19 world cup in 2018.

Shaw also displayed his class and power in a clash in 2021 when he was the second player to hit six boundaries in an over off the bowling of Shivam Mavi in the first over of the Delhi innings.
