Atletico Madrid have been in need of a centre-back for a while now as their once strength has become a bit of a weakness in the last few years.

They signed Robin Le Normand in the 2024 transfer window and have been looking for the right player to partner him with.

Many rumors and links came out that they were interested in World Cup winner and Tottenham captain, Cristian Romero.

Transfer Links

The links came from Mundo Deportivo, who stated that Atletico's interest in the Argentine is genuine and saw him as the perfect centre-back for the team.

It made plenty of sense as Romero is an Atletico type player with his aggressive style, passion, defending, and still capable with the ball. He also had a couple of quotes where he mentioned how he would like to play in La Liga some day

This did seem a bit more like a dream signing though as Tottenham are tough negotiators and a 70 million euro price tag was reportedly placed on the player.

No Chance For Transfer Now

Despite the links, Fabrizio Romano now reports that Cuti Romero signed a four-year extension with the London club tying his future to Spurs long term.

This is a blow to Atletico as they still seem to lack a centre-back and now their dream signing is pretty much ruled out.

It was always gonna be difficult to pry him away, but now the door is truly shut and they will have to look elsewhere.

For Spurs, they lock down one of their cornerstone players for another four years.
