Arsenal handed triple injury boost as Mikel Arteta provides key update image

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he hopes to have three first team players back in his squad for the Premier League opener against Manchester United on August 17.

Arteta's side are currently without Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber due to injuries.

Gabriel, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in April, picked up a minor knock during his return to training but is expected to be available.

Timber, meanwhile, continues to build fitness following ankle surgery, while Calafiori was forced off with a muscle issue during the win over Newcastle but is also on track to return.

Asked if there were any concerns over their availability, Arteta insisted that all three are likely to be available for the United clash.

"I don’t think so. If they are involved like they have been in the last few days, the three of them will be available."

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was left out of the squad as a precaution, with Arteta describing the issue as minor and expecting him back in a matter of days.

The Gunners ended their pre-season tour with a defeat to north London rivals Tottenham, with David Raya caught out by a remarkable long-range strike from Pape Matar Sarr.

Leandro Trossard was introduced in the second half but lasted only a few minutes after feeling a muscular issue.

"He felt a little tweak," Arteta explained.

"He tried to turn and was pushed. He felt something muscular, so we’ll have to assess him."

There were debuts for summer signings Viktor Gyokeres and Cristhian Mosquera, who came off the bench in the closing stages and showed flashes of promise.

"Really happy to have them here," said Arteta.

"You can see straight away the energy and quality they’ll bring. It was a short one, but at least that’s done now. When they play against Villarreal, I’m sure it’ll be a bit different."

Back-to-back fixtures at Emirates Stadium against Villarreal and Athletic Club are coming up for Arsenal, before they face Manchester United at Old Trafford in just over two weeks time.
