Melissa Bishop almost tripped during the first lap of her 800-meter heat at the IAAF World Championships on Thursday. But, Bishop, of Eganville, Ont., maintained her balance and finished second, qualifying for Friday’s semifinal in London. She recorded a time of 2:01.11.
"That's what happens in the 800. We're all trying to run in one lane, so it does get scrappy sometimes,” Bishop said to CBC following the race. “Thankfully, I stayed on my feet, but it gets dangerous."
Bishop ran a 1:57:01 in the 800-meter during a Diamond League meet on July 21 to set a new Canadian record. The 28-year-old won a silver medal in the 800 at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in China.
Bishop will return to the track for the 800m semifinals on Friday at 2:35 p.m.
