The Hurricanes are still on the hunt for another Stanley Cup.

Rod Brind'Amour's crew is back in the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in three years. The Hurricanes made it to the third stage of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2023 but were swept by the Panthers.

It's been nearly 20 years since the Cup was brought back to Raleigh. In fact, the last time Carolina won a championship, Brind'Amour was still playing in the NHL, as he was the captain of the title-winning team.

The Sporting News takes a look at the last time the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup and their complete playoff history.

When was the last time the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup?

The last time a Hurricanes team hoisted the Stanley Cup was in 2006.

Carolina faced off against Edmonton in that year's championship series. After the Hurricanes built a 3-1 series lead, the Oilers stormed back, winning Games 5 and 6 to force a winner-take-all Game 7.

In the final game, Aaron Ward and Frantisek Kaberle gave the Canes a 2-0 lead, which the team carried into the final two minutes of the third. The Oilers cut the deficit in half with a goal from Fernando Pisani with 1:03 remaining in regulation, but Justin Williams iced the game with an empty-netter to give the Hurricanes a 3-1 win.

How many Stanley Cups have the Hurricanes won?

The Canes win in 2006 is the only Stanley Cup won by the franchise, even including when the team was the Hartford Whalers before relocating to Carolina.

In addition to appearing in the 2006 Stanley Cup Final, the Hurricanes also played in the championship round two years prior in 2002. Carolina lost to Detroit in five games during that Stanley Cup Final.

Hurricanes playoff history

Carolina has now advanced to at least the second round in the last five consecutive postseasons. The second-round win over the Devils snapped a three-year losing streak of failing to advance to the conference finals.
