The San Francisco 49ers missed the playoffs in the 2024 season in a throw-away year. A big part of the disappointing year stemmed from the absence of superstar running back Christian McCaffrey.
He missed the first eight games with an Achilles injury and then suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee, which ended his season in the first game of December.
The 49ers need McCaffrey healthy, and with quarterback Brock Purdy signing a new contract, there are lofty expectations for the team once again.
On Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan gave a big update on McCaffrey's status, per 95.7 The Game.
“Christian is as ready as any player I’ve ever been around. When he gets hurt, he’s got to rehab and get better. Right now, he’s healthy as can be."
Shanahan also said they have to "protect" him while mentioning McCaffrey is excited.
“We’ve got to kind of protect him from himself, but Christian has a good idea of what he needs to do right now. He’s doing a lot less than he normally would do, but I know he is excited on how healthy he feels and the fact that he can get out there.”
So, that's a positive development for the star running back. In 2023, McCaffrey played 16 games and rushed for 1,459 yards with 14 touchdowns while adding 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven scores in the receiving game, so he is a giant part of the offense in San Francisco.
If healthy, it should be another monster season for the former Carolina Panthers star.
