49ers cut former 1st-round pick as summer roster movement continues swiftly image

The San Francisco 49ers offseason filled with lots and lots of roster moves isn't slowing down.

On Thursday, they announced that they were cutting cornerback Eli Apple.

The 'Niners had only signed Apple earlier this summer to compete for a spot, but he clearly didn't make a good enough early impression.

Apple entered the NFL with so much promise in 2016, when the New York Giants chose him No. 10 overall out of Ohio State.

He had just one interception in two-and-a-half seasons with the Giants, along with 123 tackles.

The Giants moved him on to the Saints, where he spent a season-plus and picked of two passes.

He then went to Carolina for a two-game tenure in 2020.

In 2021, Apple joined the Bengals and turned into an every-week starter again. He had two picks in 2021 with 49 tackles and another 49 tackles in 2022.

Apple went to the Dolphins in 2023, where he had an interception and 46 tackles in just 10 games.

It was four games with the Chargers in a rough 2024 season.

And this offseason, the 49ers picked Apple up on July 27 and released him on Aug. 7.

Apple's birthday is on Saturday, Aug. 9. He'll turn 30 years old.

He never quite lived up to his pedigree, but it's in part that pedigree that keeps earning him chances.

It's likely another team will sign Apple this preseason to see what he's still got left in the tank.

It just won't be the 49ers waiting to find out as they continue their summer game of musical chairs all over the roster.
