T.J. Watt is seeking a new contract from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it doesn't sound like negotiations are going well based on the latest update from Adam Schefter.
The ESPN insider appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday and stated that Watt and the Steelers are still far apart on a deal. Schefter also added that Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders aren't any closer to a long-term extension either.
"It's kind of like T.J. Watt. You can't imagine these two sides, as far apart as they are today, wouldn't be able to somehow find a way to bridge their differences and figure out a solution, but today, McLaurin and the Commanders are not close. Watt and the Steelers are not close, and those would be two of the storylines that we are tracking as we get ready for training camp," Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday.
Both Watt and McLaurin skipped their teams' mandatory minicamps in June due to the lack of progress in contract talks. The star players will hit unrestricted free agency next offseason and will be near the top of the market at their positions if they reach free agency.
Additionally, Schefter tweeted on Monday that teams have begun mulling potential trade offers for Watt, and though the Steelers haven't shown any willingness to trade him, the chances of Watt getting dealt have increased after Pittsburgh's blockbuster trade with Miami.
"Pittsburgh hasn’t shown any willingness to deal Watt so far, but he’s unhappy with his contractual situation and sources believe outside team interest is likely to increase given today’s trade," Schefter wrote on X.
Though the latest update from Schefter on Watt and McLaurin's contract talks is concerning, it's still hard to imagine a world where both players aren't with their respective franchises for the foreseeable future.
