"Monday Night Football" is here to close out Week 8, and with it comes an important interconference clash.

The Raiders are traveling to Detroit to take on the Lions in a battle of one of the NFC's best teams and a middle-of-the-pack AFC team.

LIVE: Follow Raiders vs. Lions updates from 'Monday Night Football'

Las Vegas is on the AFC side of the coin. Despite a decent start to the season, few believe the 3-4 Raiders are any sort of playoff contender. Jimmy Garoppolo has helped them to some wins over weaker competition, but for the most part, the team has been average.

The Raiders need to win to avoid hearing more rumblings about Josh McDaniels' job security. His gambit that Garoppolo would be an upgrade over Derek Carr doesn't appear to be paying off, and a 3-5 record after eight weeks would only reinforce that.

As for the Lions, they are off to a 5-2 start and are among the best teams in the NFL. They still have their warts, as evidenced by their 32-point blowout loss against the Ravens, but their offense has been one of the best units in the league. That will allow them to compete with most teams across the league — provided that they can stay healthy.

Here's what to know about the "Monday Night Football" matchup in Week 8 and why the Lions are expected to beat the Raiders.

Who plays on Monday Night Football tonight?

  • Matchup: Raiders vs. Lions
  • Location: Ford Field, Detroit, Mich.

The Lions are set to host the Raiders on "Monday Night Football" in Week 8. The two teams are coming off embarrassing Week 7 losses and will look to get back on track in prime time.

The Raiders (3-4) were defeated by the Bears in landslide fashion. Las Vegas' defense struggled to slow down undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent while allowing running back D'Onta Foreman to total three touchdowns in the 30-12 thrashing.

Jimmy Garoppolo's absence played a part in the Raiders' struggles against the Bears. Brian Hoyer — who hasn't won a start since 2016 — was tapped to replace him and predictably struggled, producing very little outside of garbage time. Thus, the Raiders will be hoping Garoppolo can return to connect with his top receivers, Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, against a Detroit defense that just surrendered 503 yards to the Ravens.

The Lions (5-2) remain one of the NFL's strongest teams, but their performance against the Raiders left a lot to be desired. Jared Goff and the offense sputtered early during the game, which featured high winds, but their defense was broken early in the 38-6 loss. The secondary will need to button up its issues, and it could get a boost in doing so if cornerback Jerry Jacobs can return to action.

Outside of the game against the Ravens, the Detroit offense has been one of the best in the NFL. They have been efficient on the ground and productive through the air with Amon-Ra St. Brown, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta serving as their top weapons. Montgomery is still recovering from a rib injury, so Gibbs will likely have a larger role in the backfield after his impressive receiving performance against the Ravens.

With a win, the Lions will continue to be in command of the NFC North heading into their bye week. A loss, however, could give a glimmer of hope to the Vikings as they face the weakest part of their schedule to date.

Thus, this contest will be of the utmost importance to Dan Campbell and Co.; the same can be said about Josh McDaniels as he fights to prove he is the best option to lead the Raiders.
