The New York Jets suffered their first injury of training camp on Thursday. Starting quarterback Justin Fields was carted to the locker room with what's being described as a lower-leg injury by reporters who are on the scene.
The New York Post's Brian Costello shared an update on X.
"Justin Fields is being taken inside on a cart," Costello wrote. "He pulled up during a play in team drills and has had his leg being checked since."
Costello later reported that he saw the Jets' team doctor speaking with GM Darren Mougey, apparently providing an update on the dual-threat star.
While all injuries are unfortunate, this one stings. Bad.
The New York Jets cannot afford a long-term injury to Fields. Let's be honest, no team can afford a long-term injury to their starting quarterback. But the Jets are especially ill-equipped to handle it.
Veteran Tyrod Taylor would be the next man up if Fields is out for an extended period of time, which, while not the worst veteran replacement in the league, has had a very predictable history of injuries knocking him out of action, too.
Behind Taylor? Yeah, it isn't pretty. Adrian Martinez? Brady Cook? Yep, that's the reality Gang Green is staring at.
This is the exact reason why many Jets fans called for the team to invest a 2025 mid-round pick into a quarterback. Remember: Shedeur Sanders could've been had -- several times -- had New York been bold enough to pull the trigger.
Now, with Fields going down, the Jets' 2025 season could be going down with him.
Let's hope Justin Fields isn't too seriously injured and that he'll be back soon.
