Josh Metellus wasn't going to get a record-setting contract.
But the Minnesota Vikings certainly wanted to keep their playmaking safety around.
In the end, they had to find some kind of middle ground, and they apparently did on Saturday.
Multiple reports indicate Metellus and the Vikings have agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract extension. Ian Rapaport adds that the deal can reach $42 million with incentives, and that $25 million is guaranteed.
It's big news for Minnesota, as it stops Metellus from entering free agency after the 2025 season.

The $36 million total value ties for 13th in the NFL in safety salary. The $12 million average per year also ties for 13th. In both rankings, Metellus comes in with the same contract terms as Cleveland's Grant Delpit and Arizona's Jalen Thompson.
A former sixth-round pick, Metellus has grown into a star. In 2024, he had 103 tackles and two interceptions.
The Vikings are certainly better with Metellus than without him, and this was a fair deal to ensure the partnership continues for years to come.
