Quentin Johnston's latest setback adds to negative storyline for Chargers wide receiver image

Quentin Johnston's two-year career with the Los Angeles Chargers has been a total roller coaster ride. Taken in the first round of the 2023 draft, Johnston has failed to live up to expectations for the most part.

The Chargers have stayed committed to his development and have given him chances to succeed, but one thing has plagued his young career... dropped passes.

When Johnston was forced to leave Saturday's preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, there were Chargers fans on social media who actually seemed happy that the third-round wide receiver was knocked unconscious. Go on X, those reactions aren't hard to find.

While the hit, which resulted in a concussion, was unfortunate, Johnston dropped the ball there, too. In fact, had he made the grab, he probably wouldn't have taken the hit that he did, and he would have stayed in the game.

This is not to pile on a player who suffered an unfortunate injury, but it does underscore the same issue that has held Johnston back in his young career. He has established himself as a player who has become hard to trust, and though Justin Herbert will likely still look his way with confidence, he will have to get the drop problem under control, or he won't be on the field nearly as much.

All of this came on a night in which the Chargers got incredible contributions from some of the young wide receivers on the roster. With Ladd McConkey on the verge of becoming a top-tier option in the league, Johnston could be on the verge of being left behind.
