Colts' QB Anthony Richardson carries heavy burden into crucial season image

The good news for Anthony Richardson is that his right shoulder is healthy.

He's on the field to start training camp for the Indianapolis Colts, which is crucial. This next season will be pivotal in Richardson's career.

So far, Richardson has been an oft-injured bust for the Colts, not living up close to his draft status.

This offseason, he's competing with Daniel Jones for the starting job in Indy. It's a competition Richardson needs to win.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell explains why:

"He's still only 23, but (Shane) Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard probably aren't in position to give him another season to figure things out without being worried about competing for a playoff spot. With a decision on his fifth-year option looming after the season, Richardson needs to look like a franchise passer to be the man in Indianapolis."

Richardson's running ability is tantalizing. His deep ball is tantalizing, too.

But the Colts will need to see him win on the simple stuff, too, making accurate and easy throws to move the chains.

If he can be more consistent and still have flashes of the big ability, Richardson can still earn his spot for the long run.
