The Indianapolis Colts have one of the worst quarterback rooms in the NFL in terms of proven talent. Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson were the two competing for the starting spot. Richardson doesn’t exactly have the best reputation as an NFL QB. After all, he exited a game last season due to fatigue when his team needed him most. There are also concerns that Richardson declared for the draft too early.
“Anthony, I think needed two more years of college... as a passer. I didn’t see him being able to beat anybody in 2-minute & 3rd down. If you can’t do that in the NFL you’re just an average guy,” Bruce Arians said.
This offseason represents Richardson’s last chance to prove he can be the Colts’ quarterback of the future. If not, it could be time for the team to move on.
“So, if there was ever a time for Richardson to put the pieces together in his development as a pro quarterback, now is certainly the moment to present that before he finds himself at risk of losing his starting job,” Sports Illustrated’s Jared Koch wrote.
On Tuesday, the Colts announced that Daniel Jones won the quarterback battle. However, it seemed Richardson’s fate was sealed after an injury in Week 1 of the preseason.
“Jones didn't necessarily outplay Richardson in two preseason games, but the former Giant did remain healthy throughout spring practice and training camp, while Richardson has dealt with shoulder and finger injuries. There's still a good chance Richardson eventually makes starts this season, given Jones' shaky track record with the Giants,” CBS Sports wrote.

This outcome is not what Richardson wanted in terms of proving his future in the NFL. If Jones returns to form, it will be bad news for Richardson. While there may be opportunities elsewhere, his best chance to become a franchise quarterback is likely in Indianapolis. This isn’t how Richardson envisioned the start of the season, but proving he can stay healthy is essential — and so far, he has failed to do that.
