With the preseason dwindling down, that means one thing: cut season.
Like the rest of the league, the Green Bay Packers will soon face difficult choices as they trim their roster to 53 players. One position group creating a major logjam is wide receiver.
At the 2025 NFL Draft, the Packers added to their receiving corps with first-rounder Matthew Golden and third-round pick Savion Williams.
“Assuming the Packers keep six wide receivers — which is what they had on their initial 2024 roster — Mecole Hardman, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Romeo Doubs, Malik Heath, Cornelius Johnson, Will Sheppard and Isaiah Neyor could be competing for just four roster spots. Christian Watson is expected to begin the season on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a torn ACL,” Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wrote.
Of those, Knox says only one may realistically end up being cut.
“Of the Packers receivers who could realistically be cut, Doubs is the most noteworthy,” Knox added. “He’s been an impactful pass-catcher at times and has recorded 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns through three seasons. However, he’s also struggled with drops (22 in 43 games) and might not be in Green Bay’s long-term plans.

“Doubs, who is scheduled to be a free agent in 2026, should interest teams with less-promising receiver depth. Green Bay would save $3.4 million in cap space by cutting him.”
Doubs has long been considered the most likely cut or trade candidate, especially after suffering an injury in last week’s practice. However, he did return to team drills on Monday.
“Doubs appears fully recovered from the back injury he picked up due to a collision at practice last Tuesday, an encouraging development for Green Bay as wide receivers Jayden Reed (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) remain sidelined, and with Christian Watson (ACL) on the active/PUP list and likely out until at least Week 5,” USA Today’s Ryan Wood reported.
What this means for the four-year starter remains uncertain. For now, Doubs’ time in Green Bay may still be ticking down.
