The Green Bay Packers are heading into the season relying on Jordan Love to make a bigger impact than ever. Love sat out last week after a minor procedure, but he’s now back on the field and looking to make some noise. As it stands, the Packers will go only as far as Love can take them.
“It’s Jordan Love time. Only one offensive player on the roster (two-time Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins), and three players in total, predate the quarterback’s time with the team. He’s on a top-of-market deal, so the onus is on him to start lifting his teammates rather than the other way around. The roster’s still solid, but competitions at left tackle and receiver will help set the course for how far the team can go, and Love’s work through any bumps at those spots will be key,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote.
The third-string quarterback spot behind Malik Willis and Jordan Love is still up for grabs. Sean Clifford, who was drafted in 2023 to be Love’s backup, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations.
Now, with just a week left before roster cuts, Clifford appears to be the odd man out.
“A year ago, Sean Clifford took part in a quarterback battle that had no winner. Neither he nor rookie Michael Pratt won the No. 2 job, with the Packers preferring to trade for Malik Willis. The move relegated Clifford to the practice squad,” Lombardi Ave’s Freddie Boston wrote. “Clifford had a solid preseason performance against the Colts, but his time in Green Bay could be coming to an end. Elgersma has the talent to eventually become the No. 2 if Willis departs in free agency next offseason, and the Packers may bank on his potential.”
Clifford arrived in Green Bay with high hopes from the organization, but he hasn’t been able to meet them. While he was a star in college, that success hasn't translated to the NFL. With just one week remaining in the preseason, this could be his final stretch in a Packers uniform.
