The Green Bay Packers opened the preseason on Saturday night against the Jets. While much of the game wasn’t all that promising, there were still some bright spots. For rookie Matthew Golden, it was his first real chance to show what he can do. Last season, the Packers were among the worst in the NFL when it came to mistakes in the wide receiver corps, so acquiring Golden was a major emphasis to improve their ability to catch the ball.
“‘When you watch him, he arguably has some of the best hands in the draft,’ Gutekunst pointed out. ‘We certainly felt that he could play outside and that was important to us.’”
QB Jordan Love has praised the rookie WR since day one. Recently, in an interview with Kevin Clark, he made it clear how impressed he has been.
“‘I think he’s shown up since Day 1 and really shown his playstyle. He’s come in really polished and has been making plays since Day 1,’” Love said.
Golden has his sights set clearly on the season’s ultimate goal: winning the Super Bowl.
“‘Definitely want to go get that [Lombardi] trophy, man,” Golden told KPRC’s Aaron Wilson. ‘That’s the question mark we got in our team room is just filling in that blank. That’s the last thing we need in that team room and, for us, that’s all we talk about at practice is getting that trophy.’”

On Saturday against the Jets, the WRs struggled to catch the ball — but Golden was not among them.
“‘It's incredibly concerning that some of these guys are dropping passes that hit them square in the chest, but it's equally comforting that it looks like Matthew Golden's hands are as advertised. Matt LaFleur wasn't kidding,’” 247 Sports’ Zach Jacobson wrote.
Golden already being a bright spot shows exactly the type of player he is. The rookie is going to do everything he can to take the Packers to the promised land. Golden has looked very promising, and that won’t change anytime soon. On a night that was mostly forgettable, Golden was memorable.
