Lions' Jameson Williams gets surprising update on contract extension timeline image

The Detroit Lions picked up wide receiver Jameson Williams' fifth-year option this offseason, which keeps him signed through 2026.

Now, the team's attention turns to whether or not it will extend the former first-round pick beyond that, and apparently that could happen "sooner than later."

The news comes from Jeff Risdon of the Detroit Lions Podcast.

"(Jameson Williams' contract extension) is getting done sooner than later," Risdon said. "Very, very, very, extraordinarily confident on that."

Williams helped his cause for a contract extension in a big way last season, when he had a breakout campaign after two quiet seasons to start his career.

The Alabama product broke loose with 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns, both career-highs, and he was one of the most explosive players in the NFL.

Despite all that, it's still a bit surprising to see the Lions so keen on extending Williams this early.

That's because not only does Williams have to prove his 2024 season wasn't a fluke, the team also still has two more seasons (including 2025) to evaluate him, so there's really no rush.

On the flip side of that argument, Williams could become more and more expensive the longer the Lions wait. If he goes off and has another breakout season, something Lions coaches anticipate happening, Williams' price will undoubtedly go up.

"Unbelievable," offensive John Morton said of Williams' offseason. "When I first got here, he came in to see me and we had a chat. This is how I painted the picture, this is what you need to do and this is how I see it and he's been unbelievable.

"In the meetings, his attention to detail, I mean, I'm so excited to see him this year. It's going to be a breakout year for him. I can't wait. I just can't wait, man."

If extended, Williams will be the second wide receiver the Lions have invested big money in, with the other being Amon-Ra St. Brown.
