The Detroit Lions fell to the Miami Dolphins by a score of 24-17 in their third preseason game and first game at Ford Field this season.
Though Detroit didn't do enough to capture a win over Miami, the team did get some answers on a few position battles, including quarterback.
For the second straight week, Kyle Allen completely outplayed Hendon Hooker. Allen played the entire first half for the Lions and was surgical, completing 14 of 17 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. The veteran basically locked up the QB2 job on Saturday.
During last week's game versus the Atlanta Falcons, Allen tossed for 120 yards and two touchdowns while completing seven of eight passes. He's been nearly perfect over the past two weeks.
On the other hand, Hooker struggled once again, and his future in Detroit is looking incredibly murky. Hooker played the entire second half and tallied just six completions on 13 attempts for 61 yards and an interception.
The Tennessee product did have a rushing touchdown negated by a penalty, but he was still incredibly uninspiring.
Hooker looked poised to lead the Lions on a game-tying or possibly game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, but his final pass of the day was picked off and ended Detroit's hopes of winning.
Turnovers have been an issue for Hooker in the preseason. The 27-year-old lost two fumbles last week in Atlanta and has also thrown an interception in two of the three preseason games.
With Allen playing clean and efficient football, and Hooker struggling to find any sort of rhythm, the No.2 quarterback competition is over. Allen will be Jared Goff's backup, but now we'll see if the Lions keep Hooker on the roster or cut ties with the 2023 third-round pick.
