Can Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II go back-to-back as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year? History says it will be difficult, but it's not impossible.
During a recent interview with Zac Stevens of DNVR, Surtain mentioned that the ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl, but said "Why not get another one" when it comes to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award. Though it's a rare feat in the NFL, Broncos fans know that Surtain is good enough to do it.
After establishing himself as the best cornerback in the NFL last season and being part of one of the league's best defenses, Surtain was chosen as the league's DPOY, joining Randy Gradishar as the only Broncos players to ever win the honor.
But if Surtain could do it again, he'd be joining even more exclusive company. Only three players in NFL history have ever won the award two years in a row and no defensive back has ever won the award more than once... in history.
Back-to-back NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award winners
Player | Team | Years |
Lawrence Taylor | New York Giants | 1981-82 |
J.J. Watt | Houston Texans | 2014-15 |
Aaron Donald | Los Angeles Rams | 2017-18 |
Surtain would join a legendary list as Taylor, Watt and Donald are three of the best defensive players in NFL history. He should get a decent chance to do it as the Broncos are predicted to have one of the NFL's best defenses this season. The best player on the league's best defense will always be considered, so Surtain could own a piece of NFL history with another season like the one he had last year.
