Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have long been viewed as Super Bowl contenders, but their postseason performances have repeatedly fallen short of expectations. The primary obstacle has been the Kansas City Chiefs. Following last season's playoff loss, Allen's playoff record against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes stands at a frustrating 0–4. It's an embarrassing stat that Allen will undoubtedly be eager to start changing in the 2025 season.
Former New York Giants DT and Super Bowl champion Chris Canty, however, believes the Bills will have a hard time breaking through that playoff roadblock. He gave the 2024 NFL MVP's team a confidence rating of just "one" on a scale of 1 to 10 during ESPN's "First Take" on Thursday.
Canty acknowledged Allen's physical talent, calling him "the most talented quarterback in the NFL, alongside Lamar Jackson," and noted that the Bills "are the landlords of the AFC East." However, his main argument against the Bills' Super Bowl hopes centers on the tough postseason rival they face.
He said, "In order to get to the Super Bowl out of the AFC, you’re going to have to deal with Patrick Mahomes, who has started every single year. As far as I’m concerned, in the AFC championship game since 2018, when he was the full-time starter, he has been in the NFL final four."
Canty pointed out the Bills' playoff struggles, saying, "Josh Allen in the Buffalo Bills are 0-4 against Patrick Mahomes in the postseason. Mahomes has been to five of the last six Super Bowls."
Canty wrapped up his point by saying he doesn't see how anyone could confidently claim this is the year Josh Allen and the Bills get past their playoff hurdle and reach the Super Bowl. He argued that past results are the best predictor of future success, and while Buffalo dominates its division, Kansas City has "owned" the Bills in the postseason.
