Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have locked in their lead running back for the long haul. That should give Allen even more security as he starts a pivotal 2025 season for him and the team.

James Cook agreed to a four-year, $48 million extension that includes $30 million guaranteed, keeping him in Buffalo through the 2029 season. The deal wrapped up late Tuesday night, just hours after Cook returned to full practice following a weeklong hold-in.

Cook had skipped four practices and sat out Buffalo’s first preseason game, though he still took part in team meetings and walkthroughs. His return on Tuesday set the stage for quick progress in negotiations.

A busy offseason of extensions

Cook’s new deal is just the latest in a series of big-money moves for Buffalo. The Bills have already secured long-term commitments from quarterback Josh Allen, defensive end Gregory Rousseau, cornerback Christian Benford, wide receiver Khalil Shakir, and linebacker Terrell Bernard.

Cook’s agent, Zac Hiller, said the running back always wanted to remain in Buffalo, calling the extension a perfect fit for both sides. Negotiations had started early in the offseason, paused before the draft, and picked back up as training camp got underway.

The Bills’ plan for Cook

Despite being the team’s top back and a two-time Pro Bowler, Cook shared snaps last season. He was on the field for just under half of Buffalo’s offensive plays, with Ty Johnson and Ray Davis taking situational reps. Beane said the plan is to keep Cook fresh while still using him as a true three-down option.

Cook was a major weapon in Buffalo’s record-setting offense last year, tying O.J. Simpson’s franchise mark with 16 rushing touchdowns and adding two more scores through the air. He ranked fifth in the league in yards before contact per rush and doubled his touchdown total from his previous two seasons combined.

Buffalo opens the 2025 regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football, September 7.
