Ian Schieffelin arrest, explained: Why Clemson tight end and former basketball star faces DUI charge image

It's rare in 2025 for college athletes to try and play multiple sports during the year. Every so often, we get a player that is able to balance playing both football and basketball, or football and running track, but the cases are few and far between.

Clemson tight end Ian Schieffelin wasn't going to be a two-sport athlete for the Tigers, but he was switching sports in favor of football. He spent the first four years at the school playing forward for the basketball team. Schieffelin was mulling over going pro in some form for basketball, when head coach Dabo Swinney hit him with an intriguing offer to join the football team for the 2025 season.

Schieffelin took it, but now his debut with the team is expected to be delayed. The converted tight end was arrested over the Aug. 16 weekend under suspicion of a DUI.

Here is more on Schieffelin's arrest and what it means for his football season.

Ian Schieffelin arrest explained

Swinney made a statement about the arrest, saying, "We are aware of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence. We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.”

Details surrounding the arrest or the incident that led to it have not been made available; however, we will update this article if/when they become available. For now, Swinney confirmed that Schieffelin will miss time in the 2025 season as a "disciplinary measure."

Schieffelin spent the first four years of his time at Clemson playing for the basketball team. He had an offer from Swinney to join the football team for the 2025 season, and took it. Schieffelin hadn't played football since he was a freshman in high school. He was expected to make the team due to the offer from Swinney, but he wasn't expected to play outside of redzone packages, where he could put his size to good use.
