The New York Knicks would like to take one step ahead after making a run to the Eastern Conference finals last season. For that, they'll need to navigate through the offseason where they are emerging as a potential suitor for Ben Simmons, who is considered to be this offseason's big name on the open market. However, a new report suggests that they may lean towards a familiar face rather than signing the former 76ers star.

According to SNY insider Ian Begley, the Knicks are looking to bring back Landry Shamet, who was with the team last season.

“I’m talking about Shamet, because I think there is still mutual interest there. If I’m guessing, I’m guessing it ends up with Shamet getting one of those spots,” Begley said on The Putback.

Unlike Simmons, who is not a fine shooter, Shamet brings league-average 3-point shooting (39% last season) off the bench. He played in 50 games last season and was a solid bench option for the Knicks.

As for Simmons, though he is a three-time All-Star, his ability and impact have faded over the last few years, especially since his departure from the 76ers. His back issues have been a big concern over the last few years and his offensive limitations are known to everyone. Still, New York continues to monitor his availability.

Simmons is expected to decide soon where he’ll land next. Teams such as the Kings and Celtics remain in the mix for his services. The Knicks will have to decide whether Simmons fits in their system.
