The Denver Nuggets are shoring up their roster as they aim to return to title contention following a seven-game Western Conference semifinals loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The club has one roster spot remaining this offseason. The club traded for Cameron Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas this summer, adding more talent on the wing and a backup center to surround three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. They also signed Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway in free agency.

Now, Denver must decide how to utilize its final spot, and Vinny Benedetto of The Denver Gazette suggests the team could pursue additional backcourt help in former Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon.

“There’s still some uncertainty behind Jamal Murray,” Benedetto wrote. “Jalen Pickett and Bruce Brown are Denver’s best option to back up Murray.”

If the team lacks confidence in Pickett as a true backup point guard in his third year, taking a low-risk approach and signing Brogdon would offer valuable insurance.

Though the 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year has struggled with injuries on non-playoff-caliber teams over the past two seasons, he would be a solid veteran addition on a cost-effective contract.

Brogdon appeared in only 24 regular-season games for the Washington Wizards last season, shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. However, over his nine-year career, he has averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 38.8 percent from three-point range.

At 32, Brogdon’s best days may be behind him, but joining a contending Nuggets team could help revitalize his career.
