The Dallas Mavericks have some big decisions to make this offseason, and could have to trade away some fan favorites.
Since trading Luka Doncic in a shocking February blockbuster, the Mavericks have had one of the wildest stretches of any team. While Anthony Davis looks promising and Cooper Flagg will soon be in Dallas, the Mavericks are still going to enter next season without Kyrie Irving.
While Irving’s player option could make things interesting over the next couple of weeks, the assumption is that he will be a Maverick next season. Still, he tore his ACL in March and will be sidelined for a large chunk of next season.
There is no guarantee that the 33-year-old star will return to his same form, but the Mavericks’ hopes of contending depend on it. With Irving set to miss so much time next season, it would also be wise for Dallas to add a point guard who can take over the reigns in his absence.
Along with trading for a point guard, the Mavericks could also fix their logjam in the frontcourt, with Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington among the top candidates to be moved. While Washington is certainly in the discussion to make his way to a new team, it seems like Gafford is the likeliest Maverick to be playing elsewhere next season.
While the Mavericks might need to move on from one of them to get a capable guard in Irving’s absence, NBA insider Marc Stein has reported that Dallas would love to keep both of their 2024 trade deadline acquisitions.

The Mavericks might prefer to have Washington and Gafford on the roster again for 2026, but any big swings in the trade market would almost certainly see one of them on the way out.
