Sunday was a day of firsts for NASCAR in Mexico City.

The inaugural Viva Mexico 250 was held at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, marking the first Cup Series race ever held in Mexico. It also marked the first time NASCAR raced internationally in a points-paying event since 1958. 

Some of NASCAR's biggest stars were below the U.S. border for the afternoon, competing at 7,349 feet above sea level for three stages and a total of 100 laps.

Who won the NASCAR race today?

Shane van Gisbergen earned his first win of the season in Mexico, taking both Stages 2 and 3. Overall, he led the race for the final 60 laps.

Van Gisbergen, who earned pole position Saturday, secured a playoff spot with the victory.

It was Ryan Preece who won Stage 1 after some wet conditions and an early multi-car crash on Lap 7.
