The St. Louis Cardinals are banged up right now, and unfortunately, they are losing another player. This time, the Cardinals are losing a young outfielder who is set to factor into their future plans.
According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are placing 24-year-old outfielder Victor Scott II on the injured list, as he's dealing with a left ankle sprain he suffered on a play where he tried to rob Aaron Judge of a home run.

Taking his place is 25-year-old outfielder Nathan Church from Triple-A Memphis. He's making his MLB debut and getting the start for the Cardinals in the series finale against the Yankees.
Scott was struggling a bit lately, but he's been one of the best defenders in baseball and was on track to be a top Gold Glove candidate in center field. While he could still earn such an honor, this injury does make it a lot more challenging for him to win the award.

This season, through 115 games, Scott has a .222 batting average with 77 hits, 48 runs scored, 14 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 34 RBIs, 99 strikeouts, and 37 walks. His .621 OPS wasn't very high on the Cardinals, but his elite defense helped maintain his roster spot.
Aside from his incredible defense, he's also a prolific base stealer. He has 31 stolen bases on the year, only getting caught twice. He's a young player with incredible defense, base-stealing ability, and control.
It's a tough blow for the Cardinals and Scott, as the young outfielder was putting together a strong season in his second season in the majors.
Scott joins Brendan Donovan, Willson Contreras, and Nolan Arenado as impactful MLB players who are hurt for the Cardinals. With Church selected from Triple-A, the Cardinals will get a look at another young outfielder as they evaluate their roster for the 2026 season and beyond.
