For the baseball world, the end of July means one thing: the MLB trade deadline. For most fans, even of teams who are at the bottom of the league, the MLB trade deadline is an exciting time of the year.
Teams can either sell off their players and acquire valuable prospects to put together a strong roster in the future or give the team hope amid a rough season. Or, a team could land a star and increase its chances of winning the World Series that season.
At this year's MLB trade deadline, there are bound to be a lot of interesting storylines. With teams teetering between buying and selling, as of before the All-Star break, there's no telling how many teams will sell by the end of July.
This uncertainty led the St. Louis Cardinals' president of baseball operations to comment on the upcoming trade deadline. In a piece from Patrick Mooney, Ken Rosenthal, Katie Woo, and Will Sammon of The Athletic, Mozeliak shared his opinion of the upcoming 2025 MLB trade deadline.
"I think that's why the trading deadline has become so much fun," Mozeliak said. "In the past, those bubble GM types would just stay put. Now, you're seeing a lot of moving parts. Part of that is because they are kind of in, kind of out."
This comment from Mozeliak is interesting for multiple reasons. The first is how he views the deadline overall. With the changing strategies, the MLB trade deadline has, in his words, "Become so much fun."
For baseball fans, more trades with higher stakes and bigger names will always be the most interesting and the most fun. The changing tides of how front offices handle the deadline have led to such trades being much more likely than before.

The other noteworthy point to take from this is how Mozeliak talks about teams on the bubble. As the president of baseball operations for the Cardinals, Mozeliak knows well how such teams will operate, since he's a part of such a team.
This comment from him is hinting at the Cardinals not just buying or selling at the deadline, but they could do a combination of both. If St. Louis wants to sell one player and keep another, they have that ability.
Sitting just one game out of a spot in the NL Wild Card, the Cardinals have no reason to offload their players, barring a collapse. But at the same time, going all-in and buying top players might not be the right choice either, as there's no guarantee of a postseason berth.
Hence, the Cardinals could both buy and sell at the deadline. Mozeliak and the Cardinals will be one of the more interesting teams at the deadline, as they could go a litany of different ways.
But, at the end of the day, St. Louis is most likely to adopt a strategy that sells off veterans, like Erick Fedde, while also looking to buy players, especially a starting pitcher.
Regardless of what St. Louis does, their president of baseball operations will likely have fun at the deadline. Depending on what path the Cardinals take, this quote could look a lot worse or a lot better.
