The St. Louis Cardinals have made it known that the team is looking to sell players before the MLB trade deadline at the end of the month. It looks like they're looking to build for the future rather than compete for a World Series this season.
From players like third baseman Nolan Arenado and pitchers Sonny Gray and Ryan Helsley, no player has a safe spot on the Cardinals' roster.
Even the Cardinals' lone 2025 All-Star, utility man Brendan Donovan, has been seeing his name floating around in trade rumors.
Donovan, 28, is currently playing on an expiring contract that had to go through arbitration with the team last offseason. He's earning $2.85 million in 2025. Donovan's having the most productive season of his career in the batter's box, having a .290 batting average, .359 on-base percentage, and a .784 OPS while hitting nine home runs and 42 RBI as of July 27.
It's obvious the Cardinals are unsure when planning on a long-term agreement with Donovan, and the utility man who could fill just about any hole for a team on defense is on the brink of getting moved before Thursday's deadline.
Cardinals president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, has made it clear what St. Louis' plans are with multiple players on the roster, including arguably their best player this season in Donovan.
"If there’s something that seems too good to be true, of course we have to listen. If there’s something that made so much sense, obviously we’d pursue it.” Mozeliak said, according to reports made by MLB.com's John Denton.
For whatever team that pursues Brendan Donovan, the Cardinals would be looking for younger prospects within the league that would help tailor them for a better future.
