During the St. Louis Cardinals game on Tuesday, June 10th, second baseman Brendan Donovan suffered an injury to his left toe. The injury made Donovan day-to-day, and there was concern he'd have to be put on the injured list. At least, until a recent report.
According to a post from Jeff Jones of BND.com on Twitter/X, the Cardinals' second baseman said that an MRI revealed a "sprained capsule in the joint of his left big toe."
An injury that doesn't sound great, but after the Cardinals "threw the book at it" in his treatment, Donovan isn't concerned about going on the injured list.
Donovan called going onto the injured list as a worst-case scenario, but fortunately for the Cardinals, it doesn't seem likely he'll be out for that long. Though he isn't expected to go on the injured list, Donovan is expected to miss some time.
The 28-year-old was off to a roaring start for the Cardinals in 2025. After a 2.6 WAR season in 2024, where Donovan had an overall solid year, he's already made it to 2.3 WAR in 2025. through less than half the number of games as in 2024.
In his 64 games played and through 248 at-bats, Donovan has a .310 batting average with a .379 on-base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage. His .819 OPS is the highest in his career, and he's on track to surpass his previous career highs offensively.
Donovan has 77 hits, 35 runs scored, 20 doubles, four home runs, 26 RBIs, 22 walks, and 37 strikeouts to begin his 2025 campaign. His impressive season has Donovan 11th in batting average, 10th in hits, 5th in doubles, and 38th in OPS among all batters in 2025.
While Donovan is expected to miss some time, he won't be out for long and should be back before missing ten games, the minimum he'd have to miss if placed on the injured list. Donovan will be out, but not for long.
