Mariners' Cal Raleigh broke his own manager's unexpected franchise record image

For those following Cal Raleigh's season from afar, there's one thing that has probably flown under the radar about the Seattle Mariners' superstar catcher.

He's stealing bases.

Yes, this 6-foot-2, 235-pound catcher is stealing bases.

He swiped one on Tuesday night in the same game he hit a grand slam and drove in six runs. Why not swipe a bag for good measure?

That pushed him up to eight steals on the season, and that's a significant number in Mariners history.

Raleigh is the new franchise record holder for steals in a season by a Seattle catcher.

The man he passed? Dan Wilson, who just so happens to be Raleigh's manager now.

Baseball history is often intertwined in cool ways like that, and this is just the latest example.

Raleigh never used to run. He had 0 steals in his first MLB season, 1 in his second and 0 in his third.

But then in 2024, Raleigh stole 6-of-7 attempts he made.

And now this season, Raleigh is 8-for-10.

Some of the best baserunners in the league are simply the smartest ones, the guys who can read pitchers and know what pitch type might be coming. But it's still amazing for Raleigh to be doing this.

He's on pace for more than 50 homers... and about 20 steals. No one would've predicted that, and that's part of what makes baseball so incredible.
