Accountants tend to have their hands full during the MLB Draft.

Whereas early-round draft picks in other sports tend to land with the side that selected them, baseball is a different story. Most players do join the organizations that drafted them, but that's not always the case.

Fit and culture are important in MLB Draft circles, but they're not the sole determinants of whether a team will select a talent. Money also plays a role, and depending on the organization, it can play a sizable role, at that.

With that, here's what you need to know about the 2025 MLB Draft slot values.

What are MLB Draft slot values?

MLB sides have to manage their purse strings well during the MLB draft. They're limited to a certain amount of funds to convince youngsters to sign with them — also known as the bonus pool.

Teams spend their money on talent, with certain dollar amounts assigned to each selection. Teams are allowed to go over or under the slot value. However, by and large, tears aren't allowed to spend over their slot value. Such a decision can bring on a variety of consequences, including a 75 percent tax and losses of first- and second-round picks.

The nature of the draft means strategy plays a key role. High schoolers might be spurned to avoid shelling out big money to prevent them from going to school for college, for example.

Occasionally, teams will spend more than their bonus pool, which can result in penalties. Teams that spend 0-5 percent over their pool will face a 75-percent tax on the amount overspent. Teams can lose a first-round pick and incur a 75-percent overage tax by spending 5-10 percent over the pool. Additionally, teams can lose a first- and second-round pick and incur a 100-percent overage tax by spending 10-15 percent over the pool. Finally, teams can lose two first-round picks and incur a 100-percent tax for anything over 15 percent.

MLB Draft bonus pools

The Mariners have the largest bonus pool of any side in the 2025 draft, accruing just over $17 million in allotment money. The Yankees and the Mets, meanwhile, possess the smallest bonuses available in this year's draft, with both sides having less than $6 million to spend on their picks.
