For a team that once held a stern policy regarding facial hair, the Yankees' values have often been focused on their product on the field rather than rostering flashy or stylish players. But one player on their 2025 roster, Jazz Chisholm Jr., defies that nature of the pinstripes in plenty of ways.
Chisholm, a two-time All-Star and 2025 Home Run Derby participant, first joined New York via trade in 2024 before the Yankees went on a run to the World Series. Long before he was traded from Miami, though, Chisholm had built his signature style on and off the field.
The infielder, who offers a bat with some pop and the ability to drive in runs, can often be seen wearing unique jewelry, whether it be a massive chain or diamond-cut sunglasses. Style is a significant part of who Chisholm is as a person and ballplayer — and beyond his talents, his choice of clothes, jewelry, and more have made him one of the biggest stars in baseball.

Why does Jazz Chisholm Jr. wear flashy jewelry?
Whether it's before, after, or during a game, Chisholm can often be spotted in some kind of bling. At the end of the day, the purpose for it all is about having fun, bringing more individual flair to baseball, a sport that has always been about tradition, and expressing his style.
A March story from The Athletic detailed Chisholm's personality, calling him not just a ballplayer but also a "painter, a rapper, and a fashion designer." When he was first called up to the big leagues, his flashy style wasn't exactly accepted by his teammates — something that only fueled Chisholm's taste for jewelry and style.
Per The Athletic, when Chisholm was called up to the Marlins in 2020, he brought 20 custom pairs of cleats that he "bought and designed himself," from Oreo cookies to Grand Theft Auto designs. Infielder Miguel Rojas and other veteran teammates saw the flashy cleats as a sign of disrespect to the team, as if a rookie was coming up and trying to take the spotlight.
Rojas and others reportedly cut up some of the custom cleats with scissors, ruined another pair with milk, etc., and eventually, there was a team meeting focused on how teammates had responded to Chisholm's style. But the star infielder did not care for breaking the "unwritten rules of baseball," which he told The Athletic he believes are often rooted in race.
"I don’t want to say this — baseball is a White sport,” Chisholm told The Athletic. “I feel like White people criticize everything that a Black man does. Black men are outspoken. They say what’s on their minds.”
His former manager, Don Mattingly, also pointed out Chisholm's desire to be himself in the story, as did former teammate Lewis Brinson.
“He felt like he couldn’t be himself in the big leagues,” Brinson told The Athletic of Chisholm's early time in Miami. “Jazz needs to be himself to play better. I could see in his demeanor and in his face that he didn’t really want to be around anybody too much in the clubhouse because he felt like he didn’t fit in."
All of that is to say: Chisholm's interest in jewelry, just like his unique cleats and other clothes, is about expressing himself and challenging baseball's unwritten rules. He seems to play his best when he's showcasing his style, and the Yankees have allowed him to do that more than ever.
Chisholm has also shared his appetite for jewelry with his teammates. In 2022, he gave his chain to Marlins teammate Richard Bleier for team photo day.
“Every day, somebody asks me to borrow a chain. It was photo day, so I was like, ‘You know what? You can borrow my chain for photo day,'" Chisholm said, per MLB.com. "Then I put the first one on him and thought, ‘Wow, that looks fire!’ So, I put the rest of them on him.”

Chain featuring his leaping catch: June 2021
If there's any way to celebrate an incredible defensive play, it's with a custom chain. Chisholm got some jewelry made of a pose he had during a highlight-reel grab, showing it off in June 2021 after making the catch against the Rays.

Arguably Chisholm's most extravagant bling was in 2025 spring training. He showed up to the first days of the MLB season with a "One Piece" anime chain inspired by "Gear 5," a massive necklace he wore with some shades.

Reactions to Jazz Chisholm's jewelry
In a traditional, team-oriented sport like baseball that has often lacked individual style and flair in past generations, there is naturally some debate over whether Chisholm's custom jewelry, or other colorful aspects of his fashion, are good or bad.
For the most part, fans appreciate his unique style, posting to social media to share their thoughts on his "swag."
