The Houston Astros suffered another ugly loss on Monday night, falling 10-0 in the series opener vs. the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. That marked the third time Houston was shut out in its past four games.
But here’s some good news for Astros fans—the last time Houston was shut out three times over a four-game span was in 2005, when they made the World Series, per MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.
This is the first time in more than 20 years -- April 2005 -- the Astros have been shut out three times in a four-game span. They went to the World Series that year.

The Astros still hold a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, so who says they can’t turn things around and make a postseason run?
The Astros unwavering confidence
2005 was a long time ago. Houston was in the National League, and it was still over a decade away from the Astros dynasty that won the 2017 and 2022 World Series.
But Houston was shut out three times from April 23-27 that season—twice by the Pittsburgh Pirates and once by the St. Louis Cardinals—putting them at 8-12 early in the year. The Astros proceeded to earn a Wild Card berth with an 89-73-1 record en route to their only NL Pennant.
However, their dream season ended with a sweep by the Chicago White Sox in the World Series.
The context surrounding that season is certainly different than the current edition of the Astros, but like that team, Houston has the utmost confidence it can bounce back.
“We’re first in our division, and we’re in August and our best baseball is yet to come,” third baseman Carlos Correa said, via McTaggart. “I feel good about where we’re at. We got some guys who are getting healthy and they’re going to help down the stretch, and we have a lot of talent in this clubhouse. But we feel great.”
Correa could be right, as ace Hunter Brown will start tonight at Detroit and star slugger Yordan Alvarez will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday as well. While August has been rough for the reigning AL West champs, the Astros hope they’ll peak just in time for October baseball.
