The Detroit Tigers are in great shape to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. With a plethora of talented prospects ready to be dealt, Detroit can make a move to round out its MLB-best roster.
While the starting pitching and bullpen can always be improved, the Tigers' third-base spot is one to monitor at the trade deadline. According to Jim Bowden in The Athletic, the Tigers' biggest need is third base.
Bowden listed a variety of top targets, including the Philadelphia Phillies' Alec Bohm, who was named as one of the best options. Bohm was in trade rumors in the offseason, so it wouldn't be a major surprise to see the Phillies ship off the corner infielder.
Bohm is in the second year of arbitration, meaning he is under team control through the 2026 season. The Tigers, if acquiring Bohm, would have their new third baseman for at least the next year and a half. With a 2025 salary of $7.7 million, his price tag is unlikely to increase exponentially in 2026.
In his sixth season in the MLB, Bohm has been on a back-and-forth trend. He started the year incredibly cold, batting just .221 through April. But, since May first, Bohm has been on a tear. He's batting .328 with a .842 OPS, five home runs, and five doubles.
His turnaround after a rough start has brought his season-long numbers up to a .280 batting average with a .700 OPS. His first month of the season was terrible, but as of late, he's been one of the better contract hitters in baseball.
Another reason why Bohm would be a solid pickup for the Tigers is his improved defense at third base. He has previously struggled defensively from the position, but in 2025, he has been above average. Bohm has a .986 fielding percentage at third, one of the highest among all active third basemen in 2025.
Historically, Bohm has been a barely above league-average player. But, after a really strong 2024 where he made the All-Star team and put on a show in the Home Run Derby, Bohm course-corrected to being a solid player for the Phillies.
The Tigers, in need of a full-time third baseman with uncertainty at the position, could target the Phillies' third baseman. Bohm has already been in trade rumors, so a move to acquire the 2024 All-Star isn't out of the question.
