Tigers trade proposal fixes biggest need with projected $100 million Blue Jays All-Star image

Despite sitting atop the American League, the Detroit Tigers have multiple clear needs on their roster. From more starting pitching to bullpen help, along with a new outfielder, shortstop, and third baseman, there are plenty of areas for the Tigers to improve upon at the MLB trade deadline.

One of those areas can be resolved by making a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. As the Tigers need a new shortstop, with Trey Sweeney and Javier Baez being unknowns, the Tigers could add Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.

In an article from Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Tigers were linked to Bichette. Rymer wrote, "Prying Bo Bichette from Toronto would be ideal." Adding a player like Bichette would be ideal for the Tigers, as he'd be an upgrade at shortstop and would likely be reasonable to acquire as well.

Bichette, in the final year of his current deal, is projected to get a massive payday in the offseason. With shortstops that have upside on both offense and defense being hard to come by, he could very easily get a contract above $100 million total.

In 2025, Bichette is batting .268 with 0.8 WAR accumulated on the year. He has 80 hits, 32 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 41 RBIs, 18 walks, and 53 strikeouts. He's also stolen four bases and has an OPS of .723.

The Blue Jays' shortstop has previously been one of the better hitters in the league. But after a down year in 2024, there were a lot of questions about whether his previous All-Star seasons were a fluke or not.

But, with how he's getting back on track in 2025, there is reasonable optimism that he can return to his All-Star form, which saw Bichette hit .299 on average through his first five seasons.

While Toronto is still in the postseason hunt, the team could easily fall out of contention, which would open the door for the Tigers to pounce on Bichette. His addition would allow Baez to move to third or into the outfield, where he was electric in limited appearances. It would also boost the team's offense and bring in a much-needed shortstop in the middle of the best season in the Tigers' recent history.
