Detroit Tigers ace and reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal was placed on the paternity list to be with his wife as they await the birth of their second child.
The move is expected to keep the southpaw off the mound for only three games, and he is still penciled in for a start on Saturday at Comerica Park against the Toronto Blue Jays.
To make space on the overall 40-man roster, outfielder Brewer Hicklen has been designated for assignment by the AL Central leaders.
In turn, putting Skubal on paternity leave allows a spot for Detroit's top 10 prospect Troy Melton to move up on to the active roster to make his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.
Melton, the team's fourth round selection in the 2022 MLB Draft, receives the call up after striking out 56 batters during his short time with Triple-A Toledo, just 36.1 innings pitched.
He possesses a mid-90s fastball, and a multitude of breaking balls including a cut fastball, a curveball, a slider, and a changeup.
Hicklen, who was traded to the Tigers by the Milwaukee Brewers back in March, was drafted by Kansas City Royals in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft and just recently recorded his first major league hit this season in his short stint with the Tigers, three years after debuting with Kansas City back in 2022.
The Tigers will close out the series with Pittsburgh today before heading back to the "Motor City" for their four-game weekend series against the red-hot Blue Jays in a battle of American League divisional leaders.
