During the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates doubleheader, there was an incident that occurred in the bullpen of the Pirates. During the game, a fan was ejected after he and Pirates reliever Dennis Santana got into an altercation, which resulted in Santana throwing a punch, or trying to slap, the fan in the stands.
Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic wrote a piece on the altercation and got word from Santana on what sparked such a reaction. While Santana didn't say what the fan said, he did say that the fan crossed a line that he shouldn't have.
"You guys know me and know my temper," Santana said postgame through an interpreter. "I'm a calm person. They just crossed the line a few times. I would like to leave it at that."
The incident was instigated by a fan in the stands in Detroit, who said something out of line. But even if the fan made such a negative comment, Santana's actions were questionable. After the game, he commented on his reaction, owning up to the fact he went too far.
"Like I said, they crossed the line too many times," Santana said. "It doesn't justify the actions, but it was too much."
While the immediate aftermath saw the fan getting ejected from the game, the Pirates pitcher is still potentially facing discipline. Whether it's from his manager or MLB, Santana is likely to face some sort of punishment for his actions, despite the fan going too far.
Comerica Park saw two games on the same day, and there was a lot that happened. From the great pitching performances of Tarik Skubal and Paul Skenes to the incident in the Pirates' bullpen with Santana and a fan, a lot happened on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
