White Sox rookie Colson Montgomery matches Mark McGwire in power-hitting MLB history image

The Chicago White Sox have, kind of out of nowhere, been a bit of a force to be reckoned with since the All-Star break.

A big reason for that has been Colson Montgomery.

The 2021 first-round pick is 26 games into his MLB career and is already making history.

Check out this stat, via OptaStats:

"Colson Montgomery of the White Sox has 8 home runs and zero walks over his last 12 games. He is the second rookie in the modern era to have 8+ HR and 0 walks over a 12-game stretch after Mark McGwire in 1987."

McGwire isn't exactly the first person you think of when you look at the lanky left-handed hitter who plays shortstop and third base.

But that's quite the incredible company to keep.

The eight-homer run is especially amazing for Montgomery because he went his first 14 MLB games without leaving the yard, and all of a sudden, he has caught fire.

He may not take a lot of pitches, but when he's doing this much damage, that's not a problem.

Even considering his early slump, Montgomery is up to a .256 average and .869 OPS in his 26 games, also adding two doubles, a triple and 24 RBI.

Still just 23 years old, Montgomery has quickly inserted himself into the heart of Chicago's future plans.

He's a Midwest kid, from Huntingburg, Indiana, and now he's starring not too far from home.

There's a long big league future ahead of Montgomery, but he's already made quite the first impression.

If he keeps leaving the yard at this rate, he'll have a lot of White Sox fans on his side in a hurry.
