Red Sox 2-time All-Star hints at retirement after surprise release image

"It's time to be dad."

That's reportedly what one All-Star residing at Triple-A for the Boston Red Sox told his manager, Chad Tracy.

The message was delivered by Yasmani Grandal after he was granted his release by Boston on Tuesday.

Grandal, 36, was twice an All-Star at the MLB level. But it didn't look like the Red Sox would be calling him up anytime soon.

If this is it for Grandal, his MLB career spanned 13 seasons across stints with the Dodgers, White Sox, Padres, Brewers and Pirates.

The switch-hitter slugged 194 home runs in his career, with a .236/.345/.424 triple-slash batting line.

He made the All-Star Game with the Dodgers in 2015 and the Brewers in 2019.

Grandal was an above-average catcher essentially for the first decade of his career.

Boston has battled injuries and ineffectiveness at the catcher position this year, which made it seem like Grandal might get a chance.

But instead, it sounds like he's ready to hang up his cleats.

Grandal has a daughter and two sons with his wife, Heather.
