The Boston Red Sox needed to add a catcher to their MLB roster as some insurance.
Conveniently, AL East rival Toronto placed catcher Ali Sanchez on waivers earlier this week.
So on Friday, the Red Sox claimed the former Blue Jays backstop, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo.
Boston catcher Carlos Narvaez has been dealing with a knee issue, but Cotillo's report indicates it's not a sure thing that he goes on the injured list. Sanchez is en route to San Diego to join Boston regardless, writes Cotillo.
Sanchez is a 28-year old catcher from Venezuela.

He actually made his MLB debut back in 2020 with five games with the Mets.
In 2021, Sanchez got into two games with the Cardinals.
He didn't get to the majors in 2022 or 2023.
In 2024, it was 31 games with the Marlins for Sanchez, but he hit just .167.
This season, Sanchez got into eight games with Toronto and hit two doubles while going 5-for-21 (.238) at the plate.

He has also spent time in the minor league systems of the Tigers, Cubs and Diamondbacks. It's been quite the baseball journey for Sanchez.
He even has pitched in mop-up duty at the MLB level this season. It's a little bit of everything for Sanchez.
And now, he hops right into a different portion of the same AL East race he was just in. The Red Sox may not need Sanchez long, but if he can make a quick impression, maybe he has a chance of sticking around the Boston organization to show the Blue Jays what they're missing.
