Formula One returned to North America on Sunday, with the other contenders determined to make a dent in McLaren's lead.

Oscar Piastri's victory at the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of teammate Lando Norris two weeks ago continued the team's dominance of the 2025 calendar to date. That result put Piastri on 161 points at the top of the Drivers' Championship, three ahead of Norris.

At the Canadian Grand Prix, the fight back came in the form of a stunning pole for Mercedes' George Russell, who pipped defending champion Max Verstappen to P1 by 0.160 seconds.

Russell and Verstappen clashed in an incident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which resulted in the Dutchman being handed a 10-second penalty and being dumped down to a 10th-place finish.

Piastri started third at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with Norris having plenty of work to do from seventh on the grid.

Here is how the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix played out.

Who won the F1 race today?

George Russell won the Canadian Grand Prix, driving immaculately after streaking away from Verstappen at lights out.

Russell's trouble-free drive for a first victory of the season barely felt like the story, though, after what unfolded four laps from the end.

Lando Norris, second in the standings behind Oscar Piastri, tried to pass his McLaren teammate on the pit straight with four laps to go.

Norris succeeded only in colliding with the back of Piastri's car and was forced to retire. The race then concluded under safety car conditions, with Piastri finishing in fourth to extend his lead in the standings to 22 points.

Verstappen is 21 points behind Norris in third after finishing second. Kimi Antonelli completed the podium and a fine weekend for Mercedes.
